Continuation of this afternoon's posting:

Info on the car ferry we took to Wisconsin.

We were met on the Wisconsin side of the Lake by quite a group of people, some of whom had come the day before also.  We were so sorry we had "missed the boat" the day before.  Some of the group took us out to lunch and we swapped old car stories and talked about tours they had been on and cars that they owned and what we were doing.  Shirley and John Mecha and their son, Bill, drove us all through the countryside pointing out one-room schoolhouses (some of which they had attended or Shirley had taught in), old dance halls where everyone used to gather on weekends for dances - mostly polkas - in this area.  They showed us where the gangster Al Capone used to stay in the old Maribel Caverns Hotel near their home in Maribel and told of rumors of Al Capone and his stills in the area during prohibition.  We thoroughly enjoyed Shirley's lively narrative of life in the area.  The afternoon as also spent in several antique stores.  It's the "pits" when you are traveling and find "goodies" at the antique store and don't have room to carry them home.  Oh well, there is always another antique store with maybe a "small" treasure that will fit somewhere down the line.

We spent the evening with an HCCA car member by the name of Lynn Vandervort.  Several of his friends who also enjoy the old car hobby came over for supper and again a lot of stories about present and past old cars and tours were told all evening.  Joe was able to put the car up on Lynn's lift and make sure everything still looked O.K. with the car.

After some weather reports of heavy rain for the night and early morning today, we were some concerned about starting out this morning.  As it turned out, the rain held off this morning although it was still pretty chilly - winter coats again today, but no "thermies".  As we headed northwest, through beautiful rural farm land and small towns, the skys cleared to blue and it was a beautiful day.  The Wisconsin natives were in short sleeves and we were in winter coats.  They must have thought we were a little strange, but it can get pretty breezy sitting in an open car.

Beautiful farmland with crops that seemed to be about three weeks behind in Michigan, New York and PA.  They have had a really cold winter and rainy spring and early summer here.

One of the fields that had just been planted and portions had flooded due to heavy rain.

This is a photo of a swampy area near the side of the road (the water is black with green algae on it).  During the ice age, some of the land was gouged out and depressions were formed that now are swampy.

As glaciers retreated in the Ice Age, boulders were left and are sometimes found in batches and sometimes found alone, some are really big.

A small collection of antique tractors at the entrance to a farm lane.

Every day has some special moment and their are so many clever and humorous people who have left their mark on the land we are traveling through.  Here is today's "treasure"

Til tomorrow .......
